UPCOMING EVENT:
THE 4th PHILIPPINE
BRITISH COUNCIL LITERARY CONFERENCE
Breaking Traditions
This
will be the fourth annual conference held in the Philippines. Its aim is
to bring together specialists from around the country to hear readings
and lectures by leading British and Philippine writers and discuss the
major issues of contemporary writings. Time is also reserved for reading
in English by invited local guest writers of their own fiction and poetry.
Participation
is open to writers, academics, literary journalists, publishers and translators.
The
Conference Chairman will be Mr.Ricky de Ungria of the University of the
Philippines - Mindanao.
Guest Speakers
Gemino
H. Abad - Poet, fictionist, essayist and literary critic. Ph. D., English
Literature, University of Chicago, 1970. Currently University Professor
in Literature, University of the Philippines.
Elsa
Martinez Coscolluela
- Poet and playwright. AB, 1966 and MA, 1968, both in Creatiove Writing,
Silliman University. Currently VP for Academic Affairs, University of St.
La Salle, Bacolod. Palanca Hall of Famer.
Geoff
Dyer - Novelist, essayis, and literary critic. BA (with honours), Corpus
Christi, Oxford University, 1980. His first book, Ways of Telling
(1986) written in London, was a critical study of John Berger. Since then,
he has moved into different kinds of writing.
Sophie
Hannah - Poet and novelist. Combined Studies Degree and MA in Novel
Writing, Manchester University. Fellow Commoner in Creative Arts at Trinity
College, Cambridge University, teaches Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan
University, and writer-in-residence at Wolfson Collge, Oxford University.
Jessica
Zafra - Fictionist, essayist. Writes for Today. Radio talk show host,
"Twisted on a Sunday with Jessica," 103.5 K-lite and TV talk show host,
"Points of View", Channel 23.
Venue/Fees
The
conference will be at Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City. Php 1,000 to cover
meals and materials.
